Byword App Reviews

A clean, straightforward writing app

I have enjoyed using Byword and consider it the best MarkDown app available. I especially like how there is a Mac and iPad version with multiple ways of sharing documents. This is extremely helpful for me when I take meeting notes, jot down random thoughts, or make lists. The app stays out of the way but is there when you need it.

Close to exceptional

I go back and forth between byword and drafts for my note taking. Byword wins for the ease of outlining, drafts wins for customization. I started with byword at 4 stars because it could be the winner with just a bit of customizability. But then I realized that it wasnt fair to fault as minimalistic app for being minimalist. I would love to be able to add things to the toolbar (especially quotes), but thats ok, its still a great app!

For what I do, its great

I have minimal needs for an iPhone writing app. And this meets them. Sometimes I get annoyed at the swipe to get back tot he title, but that is minor. No points off. Synced with Dropbox, and paired with a bluetooth keyboard, this is a perfect way to get words out of my head and into a cloud.

Best text editor

Ive tried dozens of text editors but Byword is hands down the easiest one to use, especially if you want to use it to work with Scrivener files. Until Scrivener has an iPad app, the only way you can work with a Scrivener project on a mobile device today is to export the project as a set of text files and sync via Dropbox. Its not pretty. But Byword not only handles that screwy workflow, but does it with aplomb, and makes taking Scrivener mobile possible. Its great even if you dont want to work Scrivener too.

Publishing to WordPress Multisite Still Broken

Byword is my go-to text editor for most of the writing I do — which is a lot — but Ive never been able to use the WordPress publishing premium feature. I reported the problem to Metaclassy over a year ago after I paid for the upgrade, and the response has been pretty much ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Until it gets fixed or I get a refund, Im leaving my review at 1 star, since that seems to be my only recourse.

Spyware?

This app uses my iPhones cellular connection every time it displays the list of note titles. But I did not configure any cloud service (I use only iTunes File Sharing), and the app does not appear in Settings > Cellular. So how is the app getting access to my iPhones cellular connection? And what is it doing with the connection - is it sending all my notes to Metaclassys server?

Spotlight search not working

Spotlight search is unreliable. A lot of my documents dont show up but some do.

Terrible

Wouldnt let me create a new Dropbox folder for the files. Wouldnt save the name of the file I was working on, so I couldnt change it from "Created" Uses a different, smaller keyboard than normal. Annoying and broken. Uninstalled after 5 min of use.

Fantastic. Love it.

I write in nothing but Byword now. Such a great tool. And the publishing and sync options are exactly the options that I need. I loved markdown before, but Im a fanatic about it now. Thanks for this great tool.

Completely Worthless Useless App

I downloaded this app to use for notes and markdown. But this app does not appear to do anything. I can not get it to work at all. I suggest you do not waste your time with it.

Lets me post to Slack

I like this app.

NO IN SYNC

I used Byword for a rather large writing project on my iPad. For some strange reason it constantly displays “NOT IN SYNC” and I cannot manually get it to sync via iCloud. Yeah, I guess blame iCloud. But for this type of money I think there may be better options where you don’t have to be concerned that Sync is broken.

Possibly the greatest writing app for iOS

I first tested Plaintext 2 which is quite amazing, it being especially free, and I still have it for when Byword is being unfriendly. But I quickly updated to Byword because I was doing heavy writing: philosophy on my iPhone! It is quite indeed the premium writer app linked to Dropbox (and other stuff), old default eye-friendly theme (color, font selection, etc.), undo button, little keyboard shortcuts, good printing, good conflict chooser, made for markdown although I mostly just use it for text. Problems are mostly with Dropbox syncing with the file folder thingy. I feel I get more conflicts than I should, and though easy to choose one, there is no text merger. That file folder menu is custom, non iOS, minimal and pretty like the application, but I feel needs just a little more bug updating. Another major problem is with large text files; Byword slows down considerably, making typing sluggish even on an iPhone 5, and this is why I need Plaintext as a backup. Or else, I have to cut my text files. Anyway, still my main writer app. Used with Voice Dream for reading .

No longer syncs with Dropbox

Gives error “failed to load information about this folder” when attempting to sync with Dropbox now. Can’t access any of my documents any longer. Problem exists both on my iPhone and iPad. iCloud appears to have the same problem.

great app but in app purchase broken

this is a great app and I have beenhusing it for about a year now. I finally decided to premium upgrade and unfortunately it doesnt work despite apple will charge you. the developer is also unresponsive. I recommend this app but do not upgrade to premium right now. apple refunded my charge.

Broken app, developer doesnt care

This app and particularly Dropbox and iCloud sync have been broken for ages and the developer does not care and is completely unresponsive to emails or tweets. Do not give this developer any money for a shoddy, broken app. I recommend you buy Editorial, 1Writer, or Drafts, which are all great and continually improved and developed.

Great Markdown App

I have been looking for a great markdown editor for some time through the App Store. Integrations are impressive, but what is lacking is a word count. Thats all Id like to see implemented and this app is perfect.

it crashes

When I open a file that is larger than 500KB, it crashes. Why cant it open that file? You can check this by import the CppCoreGuidelines.md file which is hosted in github.com/isocpp/cppcoreguideline

Writing actual books? Dont waste your money.

I wrote a review a few years ago explaining how this doesnt open large documents... at all. It just force quits. Years later—that is, presently—having completely forgotten about that little review and having re-discovered and re-downloaded this app, I come to say it still doesnt open book-length documents even on the iPad Pro running the latest iOS (9.2.1). Wow.

Byword its nice
