Byword App Reviews

No full screen no 5 stars

Id like to have the possibility to have full screen hiding the status bar.

Waste of money

Only able to handle extremely small files, becomes unusable after 20 minutes or so of note taking. Jumps around randomly in the text and gets stuck. Terrible Dropbox sync, sometimes it just will not sync. Huge waste of my money, dont recommend.

Crash!

Crash when open some files txt!

iCloud sync issues

I have had several occasions when iCloud either wont sync or loses my document while using Byword. I hope the developer fixes this soon, because it is an otherwise very good text editor.

I keep finding new uses for Byword

I originally picked Byword up for some edits to a markdown document I was working on. Soon, it became my go-to editor, whether I am using it for writing a post, a README, or an action plan. Today I was hunting around for a .fountain editor for my iPhone and remembered that it was just markdown. Opened the file in Byword and off to the races again! You will keep finding uses for it.

Great app

Do you think you can add a trash can? Incase you accidentally deleted a work and you can retrieve back.

Love it!

Its the best of everything Ive tried. Its rock solid and a great companion to the Mac and iPad apps. Very worth the price.

No password protection??!!

I was really in love with this app until I realized there is no passcode or Touch ID option. Privacy is a big part of why I use these apps for my writing. If I am missing something let me know. It is a significant oversight.

Attention! $6 to have no iCloud Synch

Please read before purchasing: I own Byword (desktop Mac OsX version) and I have been using this app for professional writing since years now. I am currently abroad and I needed to be able to access my documents on my iPad Pro and I decided to buy the pricy $6 iOS version of the app. Later I discovered that none of my documents appear in the iCloud folder, and the reason is quite irritating. On Byword website they state that they are still evaluating if investing money to allow Rich Text docs to be open in the iOS version, while suggesting and promoting the use of simple text. To have my documents while away from home, I did not hesitate to invest Menes in your overpriced iOS version, of an app that i already own. This is a cheap and unprofessional move, and it will cost customers more than it would have cost to offer the see less functions between two payed versions of the same app.

Solid Text Editor

This is a great tool for blogging and journaling. The app is simple, supports markdown, has preview , and supports textpad snippets. It also has flexible export options for sharing with a variety of other apps The solid cloud sync support lets you access your notes from any ios device. I like how it doesnt feel bloated at all with a minimalist interface.

My go-to-app

This is my go-to app for notes of all kinds. Simple, stable and fun to use - thank you, Metaclassy!

Broken

Fails to open iCloud files larger than 1mb. Crashes every time on both wifi and cellular. Using iPad Air 2 on latest iOS.

Hangs and crashes frequently

Within 15 min of installing, sync to DropBox, begins to hang and crash after inserting code blocks into markdown. Not good.

Write on. No gripes. Used daily.

Easy to use. Easy export: my most-used is copy to html for my blog. Fast: I like the arrows for cursor positioning and the available bar for Markdown helpers. Handy: word- and character- counts for my letters to the editor. Stable. Everything I want in a writing app. No possible gripes.

Simple and Solid

(I changed this review to reflect that the instant crash I suffered when I enabled cellular data sync to Dropbox went away when I deleted and reinstalled the app.) I enjoy Byword quite a lot. Its a no frills Markdown editor that works well, and its great to have such an app when you dont feel like dealing with something more powerful. Four stars only because I find the sync to be a little wonky, thus far. Otherwise, its smooth and does the job well.

Promising, but a few major flaws

Byword is a clean, simple markdown/plaintext editor. There are a couple small bugs, like how tapping at the bottom of a scrollable note to bring up the keyboard puts the cursor in the wrong spot. But the biggest issue I have is with the lack of recursive search. Searching only looks in the current folder but not subfolders, making it a time consuming process to find anything if you organize by folders. For such a central function, this is a big limitation.

Needs iOS 9 update.

2016: tried reinstalling again after a year break. I still like the way Byword works--its clean and simple. But Dropbox sync is still buggy. Im getting conflicts and endless spinning wheels. Uninstalled, try again later! 2014: Used to be a good app. Needs an update--Dropbox sync, which is essential, isnt reliable.

Classy markdown editor performs well

Agree with those who complement ByWord for its simplicity and features. Its a bargain. I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned by other reviewers but Im running the latest IOS on an iPad pro.

no true dropbox integration

You cannot open markdown files that already exist in your dropbox folder. You can only create new files. Big waste of money if you want to edit existing files (actually, this totally defeats the purpose and utility of markdown files: ease of moving between editing applications).

Nice markdown app

Simple, good looking. Works as excepted.
